My DBS surgery was authorized by my insurance and is scheduled for two months from now. However, I just switched to a new insurance. Does that mean my DBS procedure will have to receive a NEW prior-authorization under my new plan?

YES A NEW AUTHORIZATION IS REQUIRED!!!  In fact, any changes at all to your insurance, it's always smart to call your doctor's office. As crazy as it sounds, even if you are with the exact same insurance company, but you are beginning a new coverage year, you still want to make sure your authorization is current. Even if there has only been a one letter or number change to your Insurance ID, that could potentially make the old authorization void.

Will I be awake during the surgery?

As I mentioned in the video, I was awake for part of my surgery. However, it is my understanding that some DBS procedures do not require you to be awake.  This will depend on your unique dystonia and your surgeon's style.

Will my head be completely shaven?

This will depend on your surgeon. My surgeon gave me the option to have only part of my head shaved. WORD OF ADVICE: If you only want part of your head shaved, then MAKE SURE TO REMIND YOUR SURGEON THE DAY OF THE SURGERY!!!

I've never stayed overnight in a hospital before. What should I expect?

Throughout the entire night you will be checked on by a nurse. You will receive medications, get your vitals checked and have a CAT scan.  So be forewarned that your sleep will be interrupted several times throughout the night.

Do I get meals during my stay?

YES. And be sure to take advantage of as many as you can. So even if you get wheeled into your room and there are just two minutes left before a meal period ends, order! Even if you are not hungry, still order. I guarantee that you will be eventually. And the kitchen probably does not deliver late night snacks : (

Is DBS a cure?

Haha. Very funny. You already kNOW the answer.

Will I have to sleep in strange positions the rest of my life?

As far as DBS is considered any sleeping position is fine.

Is there a relationship between Parkinson's and dystonia?

You will notice that most materials on DBS, will have an emphasis on Parkinson's.  While dystonia and Parkinson's are separate conditions, there is solidarity between these two "siblings." For instance many people with Parkinson's may have dystonia and not be aware it is a unique condition. Furthermore, it was the result of using DBS on Parkinson's patients that eventually led to expanding it's use for dystonia.

Does DBS work the same way on Parkinson's and dystonia patients?

No it does not. For whatever reason results take a lot longer in dystonia patients.
